Rethink Vote On Gun Auction.(Opinion)

Last week wasn't the first time the Espanola City Council has voted to auction confiscated guns. But for the first time, Espanola residents are taking exception to what is in effect the recycling of weapons already used in the commission of crimes.

Opposition to the auction appears to be strong it took hardware store owner JR Trujillo only three hours to raise $2,000 half what the auction is expected to bring in an effort to keep the guns off the street.

A residents group also has been working on a plan to use the guns to make a sculpture of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a message against violence.

The four councilors who voted for the auction argue that it won't include small-caliber handguns often used in the commission of crimes. …
