* Running a ski area is a people job, but it's easier with lots of snow

Remember the storm that hit New Mexico last weekend, the one that dumped 18 inches to 20 inches of new snow on Sandia Peak? Tom Long does. It's one of the highlights of his year.

Long manages Sandia Peak Ski Area and thrives on what some many regard as the worst weather the state can produce.

He is also an affable, hard-working guy, continually touring "the peak" in his midnight-blue ski suit and bright yellow ski boots. For example, he and a friend worked until midnight a week ago so his afternoon crew of trail groomers could stay home and watch the Super Bowl.

He has managed Sandia Peak Ski Area and its nearly 200 acres of trails since 1985. …
