92-year-old writer and artist enjoys a life of creativity

TESUQUE - I've thought about transforming this column into a birthday card for author Myrtle Stedman. After all, her birthday is Monday, Feb. 5. She will turn 93. But I only met her two weeks ago at her home, drinking hot tea at a long wooden banquet table. Just outside a long window, grosbeaks crunched sunflower seeds.

So I think a card might be presumptuous of me.

Instead I will try to convert the column into a mini profile of this charming lady who lives in Tesuque and has spent her life making art, making buildings and making books. And making friends.

Her most recent book, published a few months ago, is a collection of her observations about what its title declares "The Ups and Downs of Living Alone in Later Life."

The first story, "One Day," probably give readers insight into this woman who is as warm as she is independent. …
