Hip-hop band Pharcyde shows new side after five-year hiatus.(Arts & Culture)

* L.A. group's latest disc, 'Plain Rap,' lives up to its name

Five years is a long time, especially in the music industry. No one knows that better than the members of the Los Angeles hip-hop group The Pharcyde.

The group started out in 1990 when vocalists Romye Robinson, Imani Wilcox and Tre Hardison began working together. Soon after, vocalist Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart and DJ/producer J-Swift joined in time to record the group's debut "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde," which made a splash in 1992.

The CD set the band in the same light as East Coast groups De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest.
