Prominent string quartet performs tone poems with authority.(Arts & Culture)

Violist Roger Tapping is the newest member of the Takacs Quartet, a 26-year-old ensemble that is recognized as one of the world's leading string quartets. Six years ago he joined violinist Edward Dusinberre and original members Karoly Schranz (violin) and Andras Fejer (cello) in continuing the tradition of playing a widely varying repertoire while also specializing in the music of Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.

"Karoly and Andras are from Budapest and speak with great authority about the music of Bartok," explains Tapping by phone from Middlebury College, where the quartet is performing and leading workshops. "They have definite ideas about how his music should be played. …
