Cougars Turn Away Rio Rancho's Challenge.(Sports)

Cibola knew entering its Saturday night matchup with nearby rival Rio Rancho was a critical game in its quest for the District 1-5A boys basketball crown.

For all but eight minutes the Cougars played like it.

Cibola picked up its fourth district win and a 2-1 season advantage against the Rams by playing two quarters of great basketball, one quarter of ugly basketball and mustering enough effort to finish off the final period.

The 60-48 win keeps the Cougars (10-8, 4-2) near the front of the District 1-5A race, staying within one game of Valley and taking a half-game lead over Rio Rancho (7-10, 3-2).

Cibola's Mikal Monette led all scorers with 28 points, 21 of which came in the first half. …
