Easy Win by Cougars Is Fueled by Free-Throw Shooting

PROVO, Utah The Marriott Center men's basketball crowd was far from its rambunctious self, but much of that had to do with what it witnessed Saturday afternoon.

In a sloppy, lethargic affair that rivaled even the teams' last meeting, Brigham Young posted a 65-49 win over slumping New Mexico.

Last March, the Cougars upset the Lobos 55-43 in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference tournament. While more points were scored in this one, it might have been even more boring, especially from the Lobos' point of view.

New Mexico (13-6, 3-3 MWC) shot a paltry 39 percent from the floor (17 of 44), committed 18 turnovers and watched the Cougars (16-6, 5-2) parade to the foul line 33 times, hitting 26 (79 percent).

At one point, BYU was 18 of 20 from the stripe, while UNM was 7 of 14. The Cougs hit 16 of 21 free throws in the second half. …
