Oust-Aragon Trio Still Allowed in Democratic Caucus.(Editorial Page)(Column)

SANTA FE The rogue Democrats who brought down longtime Senate leader Manny Aragon still believe they are good-faith members of their caucus despite their alliance of convenience with Senate Republicans to topple Aragon.

Aragon, an Albuquerque Democrat, said in a recent interview he now considers Democratic Sens. Richard Romero of Albuquerque, Cisco McSorley of Albuquerque, and Leonard Tsosie of Crownpoint to be Republicans within the Democratic caucus. The three joined with Senate Republicans to boot Aragon as pro tem in a 21-20 vote on the second day of the session.

"That's kind of sour grapes," said Romero, the newly elected Senate president pro tem, when told of Aragon's remarks. "I mean, I've demonstrated I'm a Democrat."

Romero noted that no Republicans were named chairmen or vice chairmen of any Senate committee following the coup that ousted Aragon, who had dominated the Senate as president pro tem since 1988. …
