Officer Arrested On DWI Charges in Albuquerque.

A Rio Rancho police officer was arrested in Albuquerque on Tuesday night on charges of aggravated DWI and careless driving, according to a police report.

James Cardwell, 40, of Rio Rancho was spotted by police speeding on Central Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday night, according to a criminal complaint.

Cardwell also was observed "fishtailing" and driving on the wrong side of Copper and 7th streets, the complaint says.

After Cardwell was pulled over, the arresting officer noticed he had "a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes," the complaint says.

Cardwell, a 10-year veteran of the Rio Rancho DPS, has been placed on administrative leave and faces an internal investigation, according to Rio Rancho DPS spokesman John Francis. …
