School Shows Need for Upgrading.

Renovations Started; Bond Vote Tuesday

When Bernalillo Middle School's fire alarm went off this week, it sent students into the streets and fire crews into the halls to find out what the problem was.

But for officials in the school district, the alarm had rung long ago for improvements at the aging school.

Thursday's burned-out furnace didn't result in a fire, but Superintendent Gary Dwyer said it was probably one of the best advertisements to get voters to approve a $10 million bond issue Tuesday.

"We're replacing all the systems in the school, heating, air conditioning, everything," Dwyer said Thursday after the students had returned to their classrooms. …
