High-Speed Chase Led to Collision

The 1999 death of an El Rancho woman in a head-on collision with a drunken driver pursued by a Santa Clara Pueblo police officer has prompted a lawsuit against the federal government.

During morning rush hour on Nov. 29, 1999, Santa Clara Tribal Police chased 19-year-old Jeremy Louis Tapia of Pojoaque, who was wanted for questioning regarding a minor vehicle collision the same morning. Speeds reached 100 mph; the chase ended on N.M. 30 where Tapia's car first struck a pickup truck and then veered head-on into a Jeep Cherokee, fatally injuring Patricia Ulibarri and also injuring her husband, who survived. …
