Proponents Push 2 Legislative Bills

New Mexican land-grant heirs rallied Friday in the Roundhouse to support the return of disputed lands on the 153rd anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

"We have not forgotten nor can we forget that our land was taken," former state historian Roberto Torrez told a crowd of about 50. "(The treaty) changed the entire map of North America. We became part of the expanding United States."

The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War, with Mexico recognizing U.S. claims to Texas and ceding land that now makes up parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. …
