Public Works Chief Takes Over

Santa Fe city councilors confirmed Public Works Director Jim Romero as interim city manager Friday, capping two weeks of management resignations and turmoil in the disordered local government.

Romero, a former interim associate superintendent of the Santa Fe Public School District before coming to the city in 1998, took the temporary post with much work ahead. On top of finding a water utility director and head for the Public Utility Department, repairing the continuing billing problems and trying to forge a path to financial stability in several enterprise funds, Romero will have to craft a $60 million city general fund budget proposal in the next few weeks for the 2001-02 fiscal year. …
