Move Proposes Sale or Lease

LAS CRUCES Lincoln County residents are weighing in against a move in the state Legislature to let the General Services Department sell or lease historic Fort Stanton.

Rep. William Fuller, R-Albuquerque, has introduced a joint resolution that, if approved by the state House and Senate, would authorize the fort's sale or lease.

Seeking approval for the sale is a precautionary step in case a consultant's study on possible uses of the 1855 fort recommends a sale after the legislative session ends, General Services spokesman George Marquez said.

Members of the Albuquerque architecture firm Kells & Craig, which is conducting what Marquez called an "any use" study, are to visit the fort about 15 miles northeast of Ruidoso next week to begin an inventory of the site, Marquez said. …
