* New vice provost envisions crossing traditional disciplinary divides to meet challenges

Terry Yates, who will be the new vice provost for research at the University of New Mexico effective July 1, said he wants to break down the walls that separate researchers.

"There are many new challenges that require a multidisciplinary effort, beyond one college or one division," he said.

Yates, whose appointment was announced this month, is on loan from UNM to serve as director of environmental biology for the National Science Foundation.

In that position, he is helping to develop a plan for ecological forecasting stations across the country that would track conditions such as weather, animal populations and food supplies to predict outbreaks of various diseases. …
