Mayor To Certify Newest Union.(Metro & New Mexico)

A stroke of Mayor Jim Baca's pen today will create a new bargaining unit for 1,033 Albuquerque employees, ending a contentious yearlong organizing effort.

The move brings the number of unionized Albuquerque employees to more than 5,000, a substantial majority of the city's 7,000 workers.

The new bargaining unit also unionizes most of the city's approximately 1,500 management-level workers, including librarians, city planners, transit supervisors, forensic technicians and corrections sergeants and lieutenants.

Baca plans to certify the union at a 3 p.m. ceremony at Albuquerque Aquarium.

"I think this is going to give us a great opportunity to work more closely with the city," said Danny Gonzales, a supervisor for the city's SunTran bus system. …
