La Cueva Hands Santa Fe Setback

Rio Grande's Ed Abreu and Kevin Smith combined for 51 points as Rio Grande (13-4, 5-0 in District 2-5A) withstood a 39-point outburst by the Highland's Mark Walters to remain undefeated in district with a 90-87 high school boys basketball victory Friday night at Rio Grande.

The Ravens seemed to have the game in control from the start, breaking out with a 7-0 run and taking a 41-27 lead into halftime on the strength of Abreu's 14 first-half points.

Things really didn't look any better for the Hornets (9-9, 1-4) in the third quarter, either, as Rio Grande was able to build a 25-point lead. Highland whittled that to 17 at the end of the period.

That was when Walters and teammate Tyrone Bullocks took control, combining for seven 3-pointers as they slowly were able to chip away at the Ravens' lead, cutting it to 73-70.

Walters was the real star of the quarter, however, as he hit for 24 points in the fourth. …
