Athletes From State Are Bearing Down in Greeley.(Sports)

Horace Greeley might have popularized the phrase, "Go West, young man," in the 1850s. But some New Mexico student-athletes have pointed their compasses in a different direction in search of their modern-day Greeley where the University of Northern Colorado is located.

Three are playing women's soccer for the Bears, and two are members of the football team at the NCAA Division II school, located about an hour north of Denver.

Competing in soccer are Christine Devaney (Eldorado, class of 1999), Catie Holden (Santa Fe Prep, '99) and Keri Stone (Eldorado, 2000).

Devaney is a 5-foot, 6-inch sophomore forward who played in 14 games and started four last fall. She scored two goals, had an assist and took 27 shots for a UNC team that finished 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the North Central Conference for a second-place regular-season finish.

The Bears lost to Nebraska-Omaha in the semifinals of the league tournament.

Devaney, an all-league high school performer in Maryland as a sophomore before eventually transferring to Eldorado, was a New Mexico Olympic Development Program team member while attending EHS. At UNC, she's a kinesiology and exercise science major.

Holden, a 5-6 sophomore midfielder, came off the bench to play in 16 games in the fall after seeing action in 17 as a freshman. …
