Repeal Cohabitation Law, Panel Says.(Legislature)

SANTA FE The Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday unanimously endorsed a proposal to repeal a New Mexico law that makes it a crime for unmarried couples to live together.

Sen. Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, called the cohabitation law representative of late-19th century views that conflict with current attitudes.

"This is a law that is not enforced, and it's just time to get rid of it," Sanchez told the committee. "Times have changed. We have to move on."

Sanchez, the bill's sponsor and chairman of the committee, said he was prompted to introduce the bill because last year an unmarried Bosque Farms couple was charged under the cohabitation law. …
