Officers Missed License Hearings

Dozens of Albuquerque drivers arrested on suspicion of drunken driving are getting to keep their licenses because city police officers didn't show up for revocation hearings this week, a state official said Friday.

The mix-up means drivers who may later be convicted of DWI in Metropolitan Court are still allowed to get behind the wheel and drive.

"Those cases are lost the driver doesn't get revoked. They'll still have their licenses," said Jerry Richardson, chief hearing officer for the state Taxation and Revenue Department. That department holds the administrative hearings in which hearing officers decide whether suspected drunken drivers should have their licenses revoked. …
