ALT jumps through legal hoops to produce 'Patsy Cline'

Stage productions have a legal side that's often hidden from public view: They get permission from a licensing company for the rights to perform the show. No permission, no show.

But for "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline," a musical tribute to the country-western singer that opens tonight, the Albuquerque Little Theatre had to jump through some extra legal hoops.

"We've been told that they want to keep it true to her life and ensure that the story is told the way they intended it to be told," said Robb Sisneros, who is directing the ALT production.

First off, ALT had to send Mid-America Productions, the licensing firm representing the late singer's estate, an audio tape of the woman who would be singing the title role. That meant ALT had to choose the singer playing the title role well ahead of the dates for the standard auditions.

Laurie Daniels Finnegan, a veteran of musical productions in Albuquerque, agreed to ALT's offer to sing the role. …
