Band kicks off season with plenty of brass.(Music)


* Euphonium soloist, horn quartet to highlight free concert

The 80 musicians of the Albuquerque Concert Band will open their season with a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Shrine Center, 6600 Zuni SE.

Brass features will highlight this concert with euphonium soloist Byron Herrington and the Albuquerque Concert Band Horn Quartet. Guest conductor will be Ron Lipka.

Herrington, a 20-year member of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra trombone section, will solo on "Fantasy for Euphonium" by British composer Philip Sparke. The euphonium is a smaller relation of the tuba.

Originally from Oklahoma, Herrington holds a degree in music education from the University of New Mexico, teaches band at Jefferson Middle School and is director of the Albuquerque Junior Symphony. …
