Albuquerquean takes center stage at St. Olaf concert.(Music)

It is not coincidental that percussionist Eric Drotning of Albuquerque is the featured soloist in the concert that the St. Olaf Orchestra will give in Popejoy Hall.

"It was pretty much a given" that Drotning would solo in the concert, said Richard Erickson, manager of the orchestra.

Drotning, a 20-year-old junior at St. Olaf College, graduated from La Cueva High School in 1998 and played with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony.

In tonight's concert, he will be featured on the xylophone in Alan Hovhaness' "Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints."

Drotning, the principal of the percussion section, said the work has "sections that take off from taiko drumming with the percussion section and lots of free playing in the strings, similar to Hovahaness' 'Whales' piece. …
