Albuquerque Says It Needs the Revenue

Albuquerque officials will urge legislators to reject a proposal to repeal gross-receipts taxes for medical services, chief administrative officer Lawrence Rael said Thursday.

Rael said a repeal would erode Albuquerque's tax base unless the state "made the city whole" by giving cities a share of the state's income-tax revenue. Gross-receipts taxes comprise about 70 percent of the city's general revenue.

Rael made the comments after a speech by Mayor Jim Baca at the Kimo Theater on Thursday. Baca, whose audience largely consisted of city employees, reviewed some issues affecting city government. …
