'Shane will not be taken alive'.

Mother of 'Robin the Hood' recalls his boyhood and the special place he holds in her heart as her 'love child'

Byron Shane Chubbuck's mother fears it will end badly for her son, the escaped bank robber the FBI has dubbed "Robin the Hood."

"Shane will not be taken alive, if they ever catch him," she said in a telephone interview.

Chubbuck, who broke out of a prisoner transport van in Albuquerque on Dec. 21 after a court appearance, is suspected in more than 20 bank robberies including eight since his escape.

Chubbuck's mother, who lives in another state and has a different last name, said she hasn't heard from her son since his escape. But she said he had told relatives earlier that he had been mistreated in jail.

Chubbuck's mother said she doesn't condone her son's actions.

"As much as I love my son, I don't approve of anything he's doing," Chubbuck's mother said. "I'm in total shock."

But she said Chubbuck has complained to relatives about the Sandoval and Santa Fe county jails.

She said she knows her son and knows he won't go back to jail.

"Shane is a believer. He's a survivor. He is strong about his feelings about life."

His mother, who has lived out of state since 1971, said Chubbuck was her "love child. …
