Two Candidates Are Quietly Campaigning for District 2 Seat

When it comes to education, passions can run high at Santo Domingo Pueblo.

In 1998, Santo Domingo School was placed on the state's first low-performing schools list, which could mean a takeover if performance doesn't improve in another two years.

"I think people are still concerned about that," said Lorenzo Tafoya, who is running for re-election to represent Santo Domingo on the Bernalillo board of education. "Most parents do know that the district has put in things that will turn our school around."

The school, which offers classes for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, last year initiated an intensive reading program, which has dramatically increased its standardized test scores. …
