County, Not City, Could Extend Paseo.

Several Support Project Transfer

Two West Side legislators want the long-awaited Paseo del Norte extension and Unser Boulevard completion projects placed under Bernalillo County control instead of the city.

Newly elected state Rep. Bill Fuller, R-Albuquerque, and Sen. Joe Carraro, R-Albuquerque, are pushing a plan to have Paseo del Norte extended across an 8.5-acre corridor in the Petroglyph National Monument. They also want Unser Boulevard extended south of Paradise Boulevard to Paseo del Norte.

County Commissioner Ken Sanchez, who is pushing the plan, said Wednesday that transferring the projects to the county would ultimately require approval from both the City Council and the County Commission.

Carraro, Fuller and Sanchez say extending the road across the monument is desperately needed to alleviate traffic congestion on the West Side.

And to get the city's attention, Carraro and Fuller said they will not actively lobby for the city's legislative priorities as a way of protesting Albuquerque Mayor Jim Baca's failure to support the Paseo project. …
