The year 2000 produced riveting dramas, heart-breaking tragedies, hilarious comedies, audacious crime capers and unbelievable performances and that was just the presidential election. There were some good movies, too, forcing their way to the surface like daisies through concrete. These were some of the best:

* 1."Almost Famous" Cameron Crowe's reminiscence of his career as a 15-year-old writer for Rolling Stone would be tough to believe if it weren't mostly true. Evocation of time and place so truthful you will swear you remember his fictional band, Stillwater.
