Council Denies Move To Rescue Building

The vacant F.W. Woolworth building abutting Santa Fe's storied Plaza will soon become history.

A last-ditch appeal of a city Historic Design and Review Board decision allowing for the building's demolition was turned away Wednesday night by the City Council. On a 5-3 vote, lawmakers cleared the way for local property baron Gerald Peters to raze the property, making room for a multi-story shopping gallery.

The five-and-dime chain, which was sold in 1997, closed the store that same year. The building it was housed in apparently dates to the 1930s, though numerous changes had been made over the years, depriving the structure of historic classification in the eyes of local preservation code. …
