Disaster Declaration Clears Way for Snow Removal.

Gov. Gary Johnson declared a state of disaster in five northern New Mexico counties on Thursday because of heavy snowstorms and deep drifts, according to a news release.

The declaration will allow the snow-swamped counties and towns to apply for disaster relief from the state's Office of Emergency Management.

The governor's action includes Union, Harding, Mora, San Miguel and Santa Fe counties. Three towns Las Vegas, Roy and Mosquero also were named in the declaration.

The declaration also includes Torrance and Guadalupe counties and the town of Vaughn, in central New Mexico.

Heavy snows last weekend and from past storms, combined with heavy winds, left the counties and towns struggling to remove snow from roads. …
