Gravel Mine's Water Deal Squelched.

Rio Rancho has backed out of an agreement to sell water to a Cerrillos gravel mining project that has raised concerns among some residents of the rural area.

"Why would we want to do this? No one was able to convince me it was a good idea to sell water to a controversial project in Santa Fe County," Rio Rancho City Administrator James Jimenez said Wednesday. "This doesn't have a benefit to the city of Rio Rancho."

J.R. Hale Contracting Co. of Albuquerque in December asked to buy water from the city for its gravel mining operation near Cerrillos. The company sought 15,000 to 20,000 gallons a day for about a year. …
