Bilingual middle school class teaches entrepreneurship

Forming an efficient assembly line, Ortiz Middle School bilingual students can punch out a Valentine's Day button and toss it in a clear bag tagged with a "Hornet Button Design" business label before you can say, "I love you, Alejandra."

Motions are quick and coordinated, with lightning-speed Spanish zipping back and forth in between the steps.

"You have to be responsible and organized," eighth-grader Melissa Alarcon said Thursday.

Entrepreneurship and Careers, a new elective class that began at Ortiz in November, has thrust 39 bilingual students into the card-and-button-making business. …
