Ralph Tasker Arena in Hobbs is a terrific environment for boys high-school basketball, if not altogether cordial for a visiting team.

The setting is unique among New Mexico high schools. Teams sit along the baselines rather than the sidelines, bringing the Eagles' rabid fans even closer to the court. When you factor in back-to-back Class 4A state titles for Hobbs, the Eagles' frenetic style of play and the legend of the late Tasker, who was peerless among New Mexico prep coaches in the 20th century, well, it's a road trip you would just as soon as avoid.

Yet, one of three West Side teams are probably going to have to win in that arena to qualify for next month's state tournament. …
