* Welfare-to-work program helps assistance recipients find, keep jobs

The seventh class of Sandoval WORKS Welfare to Work clients is set to graduate from the Success Skills class at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Since 1998, the state has used welfare-to-work programs to try to reduce the number of households receiving welfare checks.

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families recipients are required to participate in the nine-week program to remain eligible for their welfare benefits. The Success Skills class includes the three-week Job Club, which teaches skills for obtaining work.

The statewide welfare caseload at the end of 1999 was approximately 24,000, according to the state Human Services Department. …
