Councilors Fret Over Cost of Banning Billboards.(Metropolitan)

Billboard firms won't go down without a fight if councilors approve a measure to remove signs around the Big I, company officials said Monday.

And the legal battle "could become extremely expensive for all parties involved," said Michael Mons, vice president and general manager of Lamar Outdoor Advertising, which owns four billboards near the Big I.

"I'm going to fight to protect my business," Mons told members of the City Council finance committee. "We're a legal business with a legal asset."

The committee later voted 5-0 to send the bill to the full City Council without a recommendation.

Councilor Brad Winter's proposal would remove an estimated 30 billboards along Interstate 40 between Carlisle and Sixth and along Interstate 25 between Comanche and Martin Luther King Jr. …
