Sen. Says Call Just an Inquiry.(Metro & New Mexico)

An Albuquerque senator who called a state department head about an adoption case involving a constituent said Monday he was only making an inquiry.

Sen. Cisco McSorley, a Democrat, said his call to Deborah Hartz, head of the Children, Youth and Families Department, wasn't made to sway her "to take any action or not take any specific action."

"That's squarely in the jurisdiction of the judge," McSorley said.

He said he called after learning that the child welfare agency, without a judge's approval, planned to remove a baby from the parents who wanted to adopt her.

The matter came up during an abuse and neglect hearing last week before Children's Court Judge Geraldine Rivera. …
