Dee Johnson Seeks Smoke-Free Capitol.(Legislature)

SANTA FE She's back.

Two years ago, first lady Dee Johnson successfully lobbied lawmakers to get smoking banned in parts of the Capitol, including public areas and the House and Senate floors.

But Johnson, the wife of Republican Gov. Gary Johnson, now wants lawmakers to make the Roundhouse a totally smoke-free environment just like every other state building in New Mexico.

"I may even waltz in in a cigarette costume this year," Dee Johnson said in a recent interview as she geared up for a renewed lobbying effort to snuff out smoking in the Roundhouse.

Rep. Joe Thompson, R-Albuquerque, said he has agreed to sponsor Johnson's anti-smoking bill again this session. …
