Service Says City Council Needs To OK Land Lease

The New Mexico National Guard may pack up and leave the Santa Fe airport unless the City Council approves a new lease for more land to build new hangars for Guard aircraft, a handful of top brass said Friday.

Citing what he termed misinformation about Guard plans, Brig. Gen. Randall E. Horn, the New Mexico adjutant general, said the Guard wants only to build more hangars to accommodate its fleet of seven Black Hawk helicopters and ease a shortage of space for the aviation and medical units there.

"Our first choice is to stay in Santa Fe and work with the community and be user-friendly and do what we need to do to keep the noise down," Horn said.

"A few vocal residents are maneuvering the mass" of people against the Guard lease, he said. "Ninety-nine percent of the people may be distracted by the noise" but can live with it, he said.

The city Public Works Committee on Monday recommended the City Council deny the National Guard a new lease and an additional 17 acres on which to build. …
