Convocation Focuses On Black Youth.(Metro & New Mexico)

* Western states' representatives from the African Methodist Episcopal Church meet in city next week

The statistic is sobering:

More black men between the ages of 17 and 30 are in the criminal justice system locked up, awaiting trial or on probation than are in college.

Bishop John Bryant, leader of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's Fifth Episcopal District, called young black men's situation "a real burden" for the community.

"When that male is out of position, the community is weakened and, of course, the family is weakened and the church is weakened," he said.

Bryant oversees 270 churches and more than 100,000 members in 14 states, including New Mexico. …
