TRAMWAY AND PASEO BACK IN THE LOOP: Last month several readers complained about the traffic signal at Tramway and Paseo del Norte, saying it stopped Tramway traffic even when no vehicles were lined up on Paseo. The county suspected a broken loop detector, which is embedded in the pavement and tells the signal when drivers are waiting, and said it would be checked out.

S. Norden says in an e-mail that sometimes the signal was "not functioning at all; on another occasion, a flashing red signal, i.e. a "stop sign mode", greeted traffic on Tramway. Since then, I can only bear witness to the situation as described in your column: traffic on Tramway is stopped by a red light untriggered by any vehicle on Paseo wishing to turn north on Tramway. …
