Lawmakers, PNM Back 5-Year Wait

A bill to delay competition in New Mexico's electric market surged through the House on Friday and is headed to the governor's desk.

Gov. Gary Johnson has not said whether he will sign the legislation, which would make New Mexico one of a growing number of states to postpone deregulation following California's energy crisis.

The bill will give utilities and consumers five years to choose the best way to move forward.

"Everybody realized the importance of the bill to the people of New Mexico," said Sen. Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, who championed deregulation legislation that passed two years ago. …
