Lobos Legend Roybal Gets His Jersey Number Back.(Sports)

Records might be made to be broken, but legends stand the test of time. Well, usually.

And so it is with University of New Mexico basketball jersey No. 44, worn by the late and legendary Toby Roybal. It was retired, unretired and now retired again.

The latest holder of the number, Lobos freshman Alvin Broussard, now is wearing No. 22.

Roybal, who died of cancer in 1962, scored a record 45 points in a 92-79 Skyline Conference win over Montana on Jan. 11, 1956.

Though the 6-foot, 3-inch Santa Fe guard's mark has been eclipsed three times, his jersey number was and is the only one UNM retired.

The jersey first was retired March 22, 1984, by athletic director John Bridgers and given to Roybal's widow, Dixie, of Santa Fe. …
