Convicted Motorists Would Shoulder Cost for Devices

SANTA FE Convicted drunken drivers would have to pay for the installation and leasing of a device that would prohibit them from driving while intoxicated if a bill passed Thursday by the Senate becomes law.

The 33-2 vote, which sent the bill to the House, followed lengthy and sometimes heated debate as senators wrangled over whether the penalties would be too severe for first-time and poor offenders.

But Sen. Kent Cravens, an Albuquerque Republican who sponsored the bill, contended it would reduce the number of repeat offenders and lead to safer roads. …
