Language Expo Aims For Cultural Sprawl.(Metropolitan)

New Mexico has a head start on multilingualism because of its Spanish roots, but an event Saturday at the University of New Mexico aims to improve on that foundation.

Events and speakers in no fewer than 10 languages will be featured at the Language Odyssey Expo from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Ortega Hall, near the duck pond on the UNM campus. The expo is free and open to the public.

The expo has a 15-year history locally, but it's being conducted for the first time at UNM, so the target audience now includes an age range from middle school through college.

"The idea is to show kids what multilingualism and multiculturalism are about," said organizer Marina Peters-Newell, a French lecturer in UNM's Foreign Languages and Literatures department. …
