Police To Fly Quieter Copter Through Duke City Skies.(Metro & New Mexico)

By year's end, Albuquerque police could be chasing suspects in a new helicopter that's about half as noisy as the current police choppers, according to a recent city study.

But the new helicopter known as the Eurocopter EC 120 could still be loud enough at low altitudes to annoy residents, the study says.

"This is going to be a big improvement," said Dave Menicucci, a Sandia National Laboratories research engineer who helped conduct the noise study. "The caveat is it can still produce a considerable amount of noise on the ground."

Police hope to buy the $1.5 million Eurocopter and have it patrolling city skies by the end of the year. …
