* Judge says he took the word of a prominent state figure in deciding to release suspect

A judge said Thursday he released a suspect in an attempted murder from jail on her own recognizance after a prominent former New Mexico lawmaker and society matron called and vouched for the suspect.

The suspect, Theresa Kornfield, 46, sometimes provides care to former state legislator Concha Ortiz y Pino de Kleven, who is now 90. State District Judge Ross Sanchez said he decided to allow Kornfield's release Sunday after speaking with Ortiz y Pino de Kleven.

On Saturday, Kornfield allegedly got a quick lesson on how to fire a handgun before heading to the school where her husband attends class and shooting at him, according to the criminal complaint. …
