Cougars, Wildcats Play for Region D

In 22 of Cibola High School's 26 boys basketball games this season, the Cougars have been zoned. Zoned from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

All kinds of zones and variations: 1-3-1, 2-3, 2-2-1, 1-2-2. After three months, they could be forgiven if they have zones on the brain. They have long since learned to deal with it, but the plain truth is, they hate it.

Hate it, hate it, hate it.

It must then come as sweet music to Cibola's ears to hear Clovis coach Terry Ferguson.

"I can't spell zone," Ferguson said.

Two extremely athletic teams will be on display Saturday night at Rio Rancho when the District 1-5A champion Cougars (16-10) play the 4-5A runner-up Wildcats (18-7) in the Region D championship game. …
