If you're a fan of country-pop darlings the Dixie Chicks you might recognize the name Susan Gibson. That's because Gibson, lead singer and guitarist for the Amarillo, Texas, Americana band The Groobees, wrote the title track of the Chicks' best-selling debut, "Wide Open Spaces."

The short version of the story behind how Gibson's song ended up being on one of country music's most successful debuts of all time is simple.

Dixie Chick Natalie Maines' father, Lloyd, produced The Groobees' first CD, "Wayside." He played the song for his daughter, who had joined the Dixie Chicks. …
