Panel: Engineering Studies Not Needed

Backers of a proposed Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse on the site of the old Yucca Drive-In theater will be allowed to develop a preliminary plan without costly engineering studies, the Santa Fe Planning Commission decided Thursday night.

At least one opponent, though, suggested Lowe's is in a "foot race" to get building permits before the city adopts a proposed ordinance to restrict so-called "big box" retail development in Santa Fe.

Lowe's is proposing a 140,000-square-foot store on 11.71 acres of land between Cerrillos Road and Arroyo Chamiso.

A Planning Commission subcommittee has been working on the "big box" ordinance for several weeks and is expected to present a plan to the full commission on April 5. …
