Car Ends Up in Rio Grande Gorge

TAOS A 24-year-old Taos woman, who told State Police she intentionally drove her car over a rock barrier into the Rio Grande Gorge, survived a plunge of more than 200 feet and at least 12 hours in overnight cold.

Isis Martinez was listed in serious condition Thursday at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was flown from Holy Cross Hospital in Taos.

"It's a miracle the driver survived, I can tell you," said Phil Vigil, owner of Towing Unlimited, who pulled the wrecked car out of the gorge. "The car must have been going at a very high rate of speed to do what it did."
